Thermal Conductivity in Aerospace Insulation

The spacecraft that carries people and technology into outer space and back again must be capable of carrying them, equipment, and other resources with sufficient safety and comfort. The most critical role for an aerospace insulation material is to prevent the extreme temperature changes and vibrations that would otherwise damage sensitive electronics and equipment. These thermal materials also reduce the transmission of noise to the cabin, and they help prevent fires from spreading throughout the aircraft.

Specialized thermal "blankets" and fabrics are used as multi-functional insulation materials in the engines, fuel systems, electronics, emissions control and weapon systems, and other vital components of commercial and military aircraft as well as eVTOL and spacecraft. Thermaxx offers a wide range of thermal protection products including open-cell melamine foam, calcium silicate panels, microporous flexible tapes and foils, fiberglass, vermiculite, mica, silica and ceramic "superwool" materials, and specialized metallic or polyurethane insulation.

Aircraft insulation improves an airplane's acoustic, thermal, anti-vibration and electrical insulation capabilities to support crew and passenger comfort, safety and performance. All of our aerospace insulator materials have proven flame-retardant characteristics to reduce the risk of fire and assist with fire control, making them ideal for use in aircraft manufacturing.

Our aerospace products are engineered to meet stringent performance and temperature requirements, including moisture resistance, dimensional stability at high temperatures, and fire-retardant properties for the most demanding aircraft design projects. Our lightweight, thin insulation materials are easy to install and fabricated into a variety of custom shapes and sizes to meet the demands of the aircraft industry.

For aircraft fuselages and bulkheads, POLYDAMP(r) hydrophobic melamine foams with and without high-mass fabrics insulate aircraft interiors and reduce noise transmission. They also have a natural resistance to settling, allowing them to be compressed between frames with minimal loss of thickness, reducing installation costs and providing greater acoustical performance.

Our mica roll laminates insulate aircraft ducting and tubing. These products are available in a variety of widths, thicknesses and temperature ratings with high tensile strength. They are also flame retardant and resistant to corrosion and chemical damage. They can be used as insulation pads, flange gaskets, expansion joints and curtains.

Acoustical insulation and isolation are other popular solutions that we provide for aircraft. Our acoustic foam composites reduce noise transmission within trim panel applications, and their vibration isolators reduce resonance or transmission of energy that may impact the quality of an audio system or cause damage to a structural component.

All of our Aerospace Insulation Materials have proven flame-retardant characteristics that significantly reduce the risk of fire and are designed to self-extinguish. In addition, we offer a wide array of specialty paper and felt materials and fabricated systems for use in aircraft manufacturing. We also collaborate with our customers to develop proven performance materials that delay thermal runaway propagation in lithium-based battery applications. These materials are encapsulated to ensure the integrity of critical data recorders, power packs, and other lithium-based electronics in harsh and catastrophic environments.
