4 Tips for Maintaining Productivity When Working From Home

There are many work-from-home (WFH) distractions that sabotage efforts to meet office deadlines: long bathroom breaks, telemarketing calls, spam emails, package deliveries, etc. Unfortunately, work interruptions are costly for employers and professionals It doesn’t help when companies try to attract new customers in a troubled, depressed economy.

According to a 2018 study by IPSOS, employees who work in open spaces lose 86 minutes a day due to distractions. Refocusing on the task at hand can also be a challenge. Researchers at the University of California at Irvine found that after an initial distraction, it took them 23 minutes and 15 seconds to get back to work.

For those of you who score at home, that’s a lot of time. Do not worry. Here’s the best way to avoid disruptions and stay productive when working from home.

1. Eliminate distractions

Set boundaries that you will effectively adhere to. During business hours, your time belongs to an employer or customer – not telemarketers or neighbors. Well-intentioned but very talkative family members and friends need to have their conversations in the back yard or from your workplace.

Turn off the TV and any other possible digital distractions to better concentrate. Realize that unnecessary equipment is just a waste of time preventing you from fully achieving customer and team goals. It’s also a good idea to maintain a separate phone number for personal calls.

Focus is key to acquiring the right mindset, and like athletes, you need to eliminate distractions. Avoid rationalizing that you can multitask while engaging in social media conversations (Twitter is often the biggest culprit).

Unfortunately, multitasking has become a pretext for not getting important things done. Good news: A 2018 Udemy report found that 70% of workers said having conscious, organized training helped them better avoid distractions and achieve focus.

2. Keep a healthy routine

Intense, conscious effort on essential tasks is what gets things done. This requires maintaining adequate energy levels and individual determination over long periods of time. To stay locked up, give yourself regular breaks of 10 minutes – well-deserved, of course.

Breaks can help, but most of all, a healthy routine is what makes or breaks the exertion you put into your home office. Eat a salad every now and then and drink plenty of water. Much has been said about the importance of eating healthy. Still, the challenge for many people is execution – in fact, doing what they already know is important.

There are workarounds, however. A recent blog post from the vitamin company Manna stated, “The foods we eat should provide a large portion of the nutrients we need to stay healthy. However, malnutrition can often lead to adverse health effects. Diet supplements and vitamins are widely used to combat deficiencies and promote the absorption of nutrients that provide preventive benefits. “

Downtime, exercise, water, a healthy diet, or even nutritional supplements can seem like a single hassle, especially when there is busy work both inside and outside the door of your home office. But it’s always worth it.

Years ago, researchers at Brigham Young University found that employees who followed healthy diets were 25% more likely to perform better at work. The absence of such workers was also 27% lower. Conversely, an unhealthy regime is costly for businesses. According to the American Productivity Audit (APA), productivity losses due to health problems cost US employers $ 225.8 billion annually.

Additionally, there are other proven, age-old health practices that can keep you both productive and healthy. Consider stretching once or twice a day to improve general circulation. Stretching also reduces fatigue, prevents muscle tension, and relieves stress. Take deep breaths during a break to increase oxygen intake, lower blood pressure, and maintain proper energy levels.

3. Stick to the regular hours

It was management guru Peter Drucker who once said, “Until we can manage time, we can’t manage anything else.” A routine will keep you busy. By following a regular business plan, managers or employees can also reach you from home for urgent inquiries. Remember, when you work from home there is no overcommunication.

Unfortunately, due to the innate comfort and convenience of the work environment, the WFH movement often generates complacency. Blaming Covid-19 for delays may have worked (and was true) in the past few months, but in the not-too-distant future, that excuse will fall on deaf ears.

It can be difficult for remote managers to take corrective action when teams are geographically dispersed. This represents a reward for an individual’s initiative to get things done. No one is perfect, but working hours regularly and set in stone certainly helps.

4. Be a home professional

Nobody is looking, but it still helps to wear business casual attire when working from home. Rocking sweatpants or pajamas may be more comfortable, but the posture that accompanies them often follows the example, that is, indolence and lack of precision. If you look at the part, you mean business getting things done.

Ultimately, you will execute how you feel. Clothing plays an important role in this.

Another way to keep things “professional” in your home office is to have weekly goals near your computer screen. Also, be more aware of your communication. Schedule regular calls with colleagues and stay in touch with customers and stakeholders.

Answer non-urgent emails or inquiries only at certain times of the day. These are all things you may be more inclined to do when working with others in the office. Work that matters, not just to create the facade of the business.

For the vast majority of WFH employees, productivity is not about discovering a magic formula. Instead, it is simply a matter of applying some best, sound practices that get the job done. Or at least have the mental strength to make it happen.

Rest assured, the more you are able to block out common, often self-imposed distractions, maintain a healthy body and mood, keep a consistent schedule, and keep things professional, even when Zoom meetings are something like this “Formal” are like things get, your productivity won’t decrease in the slightest.
