Meet Electra Davis, the 36-year-old founder and CEO of Mysteek Naturals – a popular black line of chemical-free hair color products. She started her successful company just two years after becoming a divorced single mother with two children.
A victim of child abuse
Electra grew up with her mother as an only child in Buffalo, NY. However, her mother worked and partied a lot, and Electra often stayed with her grandparents. As a result, one of her uncles began sexually abusing her when she was 5 to 8 years old.
After this was discovered, she went to live with her father. She started working when she was 14 and started paying her father's rent when she was 15. She was even forced to buy her own groceries and was given a side of the refrigerator to eat only the food she bought. Two weeks after graduating from high school, she joined the army at the age of 18.
While in the Army, Electra married and had one child. She later left the army, had another child, and bitterly divorced her fraudulent husband while working full-time as a contract specialist. At the time, she was also a full-time student.
She says that her life experiences as a child and adult taught her to develop tenacity, become independent, and eventually become entrepreneurial.
It was then that she came up with the brilliant idea of creating chemical-free hair color products that people could use to have fun with their hair without having to bleach their hair. Like so many other women, she was looking for an alternative to the conditioners that didn't give her the vivid color and that used dangerous ingredients.
