Fantasy Harm Updates: Ezekiel Elliott, Cam Akers, James Robinson, extra impacting Week 16 RB rankings

Fantasy Injury Updates: Ezekiel Elliott, Cam Akers, James Robinson, more impacting Week 16 RB rankings

Before week 16 and the championship game in most fantasy football leagues, there are many injury concerns in the RB position. Ezekiel Elliott (calf), Cam Akers (ankles), James Robinson (ankles) and Ronald Jones (fingers / COVID) are just a handful of the big running backs who are ailing and whose regular season is coming to an end. Your status will be questioned this week. These players will have a huge impact on top start and seat decisions, our Fantasy RB rankings for week 16, and potential waivers for Fantasy owners in need of Flex Sleepers.

Is Ezekiel Elliott playing this week?

Elliott (Kalb) was unable to train before week 15 and while reports say he would likely be fit despite the injury, he was ultimately a surprise that was inactive for the Cowboys. In the future, its status will be in the air.

With the Cowboys' playoff chances falling into the slim-to-none category, the team may have a tendency not to play Elliott if he's not entirely healthy. There's no point in risking long-term injury to win, which will likely mean meaningless games. Plus, Backup Tony Pollard looked good instead of Elliott. He's done a lot to get the Cowboys Offensive through the air, and he's met with massive success on the ground. He'd be standing in line for an RB2 seat if Elliott can't play in week 16.

Elliott's status will likely depend on whether he can get onto the practice field this week. As mentioned earlier, he was unable to train last week. So if he does not attend training on Wednesday, it is a bad sign of his availability this week. Even if he is able to play, he could break up with Pollard, so it seems Elliott will be a low-upside game this week, if he can get back into action at all.

Is Cam Akers playing this week?

Akers (ankle) sustained an injury against the Jets and it blew him away for the rest of the fantasy season. According to ESPN's Lindsey Thiry, head coach Sean McVay confirmed Akers had a sprained ankle that will expose him "at least" for week 16.

If Akers is out, the Rams will turn to Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown again to improve their field. Henderson is the more explosive of the two, averaging 10.1 touches per game this year, while Brown has averaged eight touches per game. Even so, Brown has overtaken Henderson in the past few weeks so this could be a real carry split. Both are potential flex options against the Seahawks.

Is James Robinson playing this week?

Robinson (ankle) had an injury against the Ravens last week and didn't return to the Jaguars blowout loss in the fourth quarter. He also had a knee injury that restricted his training this week so the rookie is sure to be "battered".

Given the Jaguars are battling for number 1 overall rather than a playoff spot, the team could choose to keep Robinson out if he's less than 100 percent. This would allow him to be completely healthy for the next season and avoid possible injuries in the last two weeks of the year. It's unclear if this is in the team's plans, but rest assured that Robinson's injuries will be treated with the utmost caution.

If Robinson is out in week 16, the jaguars turn to the Dare Ogunbowale / Devine Ozigbo tandem to carry the cargo. The two have had a total of 15 touches this season, so it's hard to recommend her as a starter in a fantasy format, but Ozigbo was thrilled in the off-season before sustaining a hamstring injury that caused him a flight in the DFS tournament game could be worth.

Is Ronald Jones playing this week?

Jones (Finger / COVID) was incapacitated last week following surgery to repair a broken finger and landing on the COVID list. Fantasy owners will eagerly await his status before week 16, but with Bruce Arians expecting Jones to train late last week before landing on the COVID list, Jones should at least have a chance to play.

Of course, Jones has to be removed from the COVID list first. It is unclear whether he was a positive test or just close contact, so this will need to be watched over the coming days.

If Jones can't get back on the field, Leonard Fournette would once again lead the Buccaneers field and have a hugely favorable matchup against the Lions' poor defenses. LeSean McCoy should also be considered a boom-or-bust flex game in this scenario as his ability to catch passes would allow him to use the Lions' defenses.
