How long is Fernando Tatis Jr. out? Injury timeline, return date, latest updates on Padres star

Padre’s shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. suffered a scary looking injury to his left shoulder on Monday night. The San Diego star left the game immediately and it’s not clear when he’ll be back in action.

Tatis sustained the injury while sniffing at a breaking ball from Giants pitcher Anthony DeSclafani in the third inning in San Diego. Tatis appeared to injure himself on a long follow-through to complete the swing.

Tatis went to the Padres’ clubhouse for observation. At 12:51 a.m. ET, the club announced that they had subluxed his shoulder and will be reassessed Tuesday.

Here’s everything we know about Tatis’ injury and the latest news on when he might be back on the field.

What is Fernando Tatis Jr.’s injury?

Tatis appeared to injure his left shoulder while swinging through a field on April 5. He left the field and tried to keep his arm still. According to the team, he suffered a shoulder subluxation, which basically means his humerus partially popped out of his shoulder joint.

Tatis injured his left (not throwing) shoulder during a routine game on the field in late spring training. It is not known whether the injuries are related.

MLB.com noted in the March shoulder question that Tatis, 22, previously had shoulder problems as a professional. However, he has not yet been put on the injury list for a shoulder injury. He was at the Padres IL in 2019 with a thigh strain and a stress response in the lower back.

How long will Fernando Tatis Jr. be out?

TO UPDATE: Padre manager Jayce Tingler told reporters on April 15 (according to MLB.com and the San Diego Union-Tribune) that he was “optimistic” that Tatis could return on April 16 for the start of a weekend series against NL West rival Dodgers.

ORIGINAL: A lot of people ask this question, but at the moment there is no answer. He will be reassessed on Tuesday, but the general time frame for a subluxation is a few weeks. However, it may take longer depending on how severely the surrounding ligaments, tendons, or the rotator cuff are damaged.
