If someone can no longer function because of their "pre-traumatic" climate problems, a variety of therapists offer therapies that range from "The Great Turning", a social change from an industrial, growth and consumer society to a society that is more just and more lasting, collapse transcendence (promoting psycho-social-spiritual-cultural changes in order to accept and experience collapse with a little calm and stability).

Group interventions to combat climate change

From disasters and social disruptions to existential problems, climate action groups can not only provide much-needed support for patients, but they can also aid psychiatry's response to public health.

The climate crisis poses unique and complex challenges to the mental health and well-being of individuals and communities. The need for interventions at the global level is increasingly driving mental health providers to focus on interventions in large groups. This article describes a number of the most popular group approaches. It informs psychiatrists about the climate protection groups our patients can access and improves our understanding of the practices of those groups, which can aid psychiatry's response to public health.

The Work That Reconnects (TWTR) is an approach developed by Joanna Macy, PhD, which is described as a “transformative learning process”. 9 TWTR includes aspects of deep ecology, systems theory, eco-psychology, Buddhism and activism. … Instead of turning away from the problem, the group members formulate and honor their feelings anew and then develop new perspectives in order to bring about "The Great Turning", a social transformation from an industrial, growth and consumer society to a more just society.

The Deep Adaptation Forum was developed by Jem Bendell, PhD, following the publication of his paper, "Deep Adaptation: A Map for Navigating Climate Tragedy" 12, which went viral. Deep Adaptation (DA) positions itself outside of mainstream work on climate adaptation in that it implies an inevitable breakdown and collapse of society due to climate change, and deliberately challenges the idea that hope should be part of adapting to climate change.

DA tries to develop a so-called willingness to collapse (i.e. to create a just system for the distribution of livelihoods such as food, water, energy and health care) and collapse transcendence (promoting psycho-social-spiritual-cultural changes to accept) and collapse with experience some serenity and stability).

No doubt, climate grief will achieve a happier, more balanced mental state after being offered the choice of accepting the end of the world with a smile or abandoning capitalism and adopting a simple sharing mentality.

Interestingly, many group leaders who advocate rejection of consumption and acceptance of the coming climate catastrophe seem to accept payments for the services they provide. Undoubtedly, the handing over of money helps fuel the healing transformation from consumerist-obsessed climate debt to a simpler, more positive mental attitude where less stuff is obsessed.
