NIH Financed Dangerous “Gain of Function” Virus Studies in Wuhan – Watts Up With That?

Dr. Fauci denies NIH-funded profit from functional studies in Wuhan. But last May, WUWT reported a published feature paper that includes a top Wuhan virologist as an author, confirming NIH funding.

Rand Paul: Dr. Fauci lied to Congress about funding Wuhan’s laboratory research

Fauci contests US-funded “gain-of-function” research in China

By Nikolas Lanum | Fox News

Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky., Alleged on Wednesday that Dr. Anthony Fauci lied to Congress when he denied that the National Institute of Health was funding research in the controversial Wuhan laboratory.

“DR. Fauci, are you still supporting the NIH funding for the Wuhan laboratory?” He asked the NIH chief.

“Senator Paul, with all due respect, you are totally, completely and completely wrong,” replied a clearly irritated Fauci. “The NIH has never funded a profit on functional research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

While speaking with co-host Bill Hemmer, Paul responded to his claim, claiming that Dr. Shi Zhengli, the Wuhan-based “bat woman” virologist who researched coronavirus variants in animals, wrote an article that MIT scientists suspected was related to profit-function research (making pathogens more deadly or more easily transmissible).

Paul claims the paper recognized that their funding came from the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a subgroup of the NIH that Dr. Fauci is the director.

WUWT reported on the apparent collaboration between US and Chinese researchers in researching the gain of function in May 2020.

The following is a link to a paper recognizing NIH funding and discussing dangerous gain-of-function studies in which animal or human viruses are genetically modified to add new traits that make the viruses more dangerous to humans. Lead Wuhan virologist Shi Zhengli is one of the authors. The paper contains the warning “The potential to prepare for and mitigate future outbreaks must be weighed against the risk of creating more dangerous pathogens.”.

So I suggest that Senator Rand Paul be on fairly solid ground in suggesting that Dr. Fauci may have wrong his facts regarding US funding for receiving functional studies.

I think it’s important to note that gain in function is not an attempt to make a biological weapon. The researchers are trying to simulate what could happen anyway by turning the clock forward so they can see what pandemics could arise in the near future. Viruses continue to evolve genetically by grabbing parts of other viruses and building those parts into the next strain. If researchers find that one or two minor changes to an animal virus result in a dangerous human pathogen, they can label the original virus as a waiting pandemic that poses an imminent risk to humans.

However, if you spin it forward, there is a risk that, by virtue of their own approval, researchers will inadvertently trigger the pandemic they fear will occur naturally. There is a strong case that such experiments are just too dangerous to conduct.

This evidence of a link between NIH, Wuhan and Functional Gains Studies is not evidence that Covid-19 is the unfortunate outcome of an insanely high risk Chinese joint virus study that leaked from the lab. However, I think it is reasonable to conclude that Dr. Fauci has many more questions to answer and clarify his response to NIH funding for receiving functional studies.
