Week 5 Fantasy WR PPR Rankings: Should-starts, sleepers, potential busts

Week 5 Fantasy WR PPR Rankings: Must-starts, sleepers, potential busts

The meter and rating boost that the NFL has taken has been generally good for wide receivers, but it seems to have leveled the playing field a bit for traditional "PPR wide receivers". While there are still possession receivers, their receiving methods are not quite as valuable when other receivers notice an increase in large games and touchdowns. As a result, our Fantasy WR PPR rankings are increasingly starting to resemble our standard set, and that is true in week 5 as well.

In the past we always have recipients like Julian Edelman, D.J. Moore, Jarvis Landry, Golden Tate and Jamison Crowder in PPR leagues. This season, you could add the likes of Diontae Johnson and Russell Gage to the list. And while it's true that some of these guys are still standing up, Crowder and Johnson in particular, some of the others don't really live up to their pass-catching hype. Edelman had a monster week 2, but he had a total of seven catches in weeks 1 and 3. Moore has four catches or fewer in three out of four games, and Landry has five more catches or 61 yards to top in one game. Tate achieved similar output to Landry.

Quarterback | Run back | Wide receiver | Narrow end | D / ST | Kicker

A 5-50 statistic used to be "good enough" for a WR3 place in PPR leagues, but not anymore. Too many other receivers explode. While recipients like Tyler Boyd, Crowder, Johnson, and CeeDee Lamb can maintain consistently high PPR rankings because they are also decent bets on yards and touchdowns, this doesn't necessarily apply to the traditional ownership types. Ultimately, they move up in our PPR ranking compared to our standard rate, but overall they move down in both.

Quarterback | Run back | Narrow end | D / ST | Kicker

That doesn't mean we're totally done with all of these guys. Moore (@ Falcons) and Edelman (vs. Broncos) have cheap matchups this week that put them in the top 25, and Tate (@ Cowboys) is in a good place too. Greg Ward Jr. (@ Steelers) has a tough matchup, but given the Eagles WR's injury issues, he might be one of those "traditional" PPR receivers if all you need is a high floor for your final receiver seat.

WEEK 5 DFS TOURNAMENT LINEUPS: FanDuel | DraftKings | Yahoo

Of course, if traditional big-play receivers like Robby Anderson (@ Falcons) catch up more than five receptions each week and go 100 yards, then who needs little boys in the middle? People like him, Terry McLaurin (v. Rams) and to a lesser extent Marquise Brown (v. Bengals) are becoming more reliable this year. When you combine that with a lot of Superstars seeing even higher target percentages than usual, you have a rising tide that lifts most boats – just not those who are used to being lifted in that format.

The Packers and Lions are goodbye this week, which kills at least a few starters a week. So be ready to consider all kinds of options when looking for replacements.
