What is the Westminster Kennel Club dog show?

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is an annual event with nearly 3,000 dogs. It usually takes place in Madison Square Garden, although it will take place outdoors in Tarrytown, New York in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The show is made up of dogs struggling to be the best in their group. There are seven groups in total, including hunting dogs, toys, non-athletic, athletic, working, herding, and terriers. The best dog in each group then competes for the title “Best in Show”.

The show also includes the Masters Agility Championship and the Masters Obedience Championships.

History of the Westminster Dog Show

The first Westminster Dog Show was held by the Westminster Kennel Club in Gilmore’s Garden, the predecessor of Madison Square Garden, in 1877. The event was originally supposed to last three days, but after 1,201 registered dogs, it was held one day longer. From then on it became an annual event.

The show has been held every year since 1877. It took place during the Great Depression, wartime and pandemic years like 2021.

The name Westminster comes from a Manhattan hotel where the group of hunters who founded the kennel club often met. The only sporting event that runs longer than the Westminster Dog Show is the Kentucky Derby, which is two years older.

Westminster Dog Show winner

The Best in Show Award has been presented annually since 1907, 30 years after the original Westminster Dog Show began in 1877. Last year’s winner, Siba the Poodle, gave the non-sporting group their 11th win, tied with the fourth-most of the seven groups.
